Florida Bar clears Mark O’Mara of suborning Shellie Zimmerman perjury

Hey folks, In the aftermath of Shellie Zimmerman’s perjury charges, the Florida Bar opened an investigation into whether George Zimmerman’s lawyer Mark O’Mara may have solicited her false testimony. Yesterday, the Florida Bar concluded that there was no credible evidence that O’Mara engaged in any such misconduct. For my full post on this, including video of O’Mara discussing the matter in an interview, check out Legal Insurrection: Florida Bar clears Mark O’Mara of suborning Shellie …

Hey folks, Earlier today Circuit Judge Russell Healey denied a defense motion to limit media access to discovery evidence in the trial of Michael Dunn. (We previously covered this case here: Next Florida self-defense trial: Loud music, teens in a car and a shooting.) For my full post on this, as well as the full-text of Judge …

Hey folks, The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office has released one of the 911 calls made from the Cobb Theater in the immediate aftermath of the shooting of 43-year-old Navy Veteran Chad Oulson by 71-year-old retired police Captain Curtis Reeves. The call was apparently made by a man at the scene.  Efforts to try to save Oulson’s live can clearly be heard underway. At one point when the dispatcher asks the caller if he can identify …

Law of Self Defense is Guest on “Their Finest Hour” Radio Program

Hey folks, Well, last night I was a guest on “Their Finest Hour,” a web-based radio program owned and operated by Allan Bourdius. Allan was away on business, and his guest-host, Alex Kaufmann, was kind enough to invite me on. I cautioned Alex that I’m pretty dull, but he threw caution to the wind and had me on, regardless.  (“Their Finest Hour” is hosted on Vigilant Liberty Radio.) Here’s a quick breakdown of the various …

Stand Your Ground: The Movie

Hey folks, Well, several of you have alerted me to an event I should have guessed would be coming: “Stand Your Ground–The Movie”. I should state up front that I have, of course, nothing to do with this film, have not seen it, don’t know any of the people involved, and sadly was not a highly paid expert consultant on any phase of its production. That said, the title alone compels me to take some …

Gawker analyzes Florida’s “Warning Shot” bill, implosion follows

Hey folks, The Washington Free Beacon did a wonderfully humorous job fisking a post at Gawker regarding Florida’s so-called “Warning Shot” law.  I previously have explained and debunked many of the myths about the law, Florida “Warning Shot” Bill Advances. The headline of the WFB piece, written by CJ Ciaramella, captures the gist of the matter succintly:  “Gawker Got Literally Everything Wrong About Florida’s New Warning Shots Bill.“ In reading the Gawker  article by Adam Weinstein, one …

The “Popcorn Shooter,” Stand-Your-Ground, and Duty to Retreat

Hey folks, As I noted in my piece over at Legal Insurrection a couple of days ago, the “popcorn shooter” case down in Florida–in which retired police Captain Curtis Reeves allegedly shot and killed Navy veteran Chad Oulson for, some have claimed, throwing popcorn at Reeves–has resulted in the now routine howling and misinformation bout Stand-Your-Ground laws (see “Florida Theater Shooting Induces Another Round of “Stand Your Ground” Mania”).   Charles C.W. Cooke was kind …
