Excellent guidance to gun owners
Excellent guide to self-defense law, comprehensive information
Concisely teaches principles of self-defense law
May be the most important book on the subject I’ve yet seen
May be the most important book on the subject that I’ve seen yet. Easy to read, set up in a logical sequence. You make points and then illustrated them with stories from real life to show the practical application. I’ve been teaching use of lethal force/self defense for 20 years and have served as an expert witness on self defense, and yet in just the first 10 minutes of skimming, I’ve already learned valuable information.
– Peter Burlingame, Self-Defense Initiative, US Virgin Islands
The owner’s manual for your concealed carry permit
As important as your ammo selection for self-defense
An outstanding book. Love it.
Tons of useful information, in easy-to-understand format
Just wanted to let you know that I received “The Law of Self Defense, 2nd Edition” the other day and I’m loving it! TONS of useful information presented in an easy-to-understand, legal fashion. It’s a great read and I’d like to personally thank you for sharing such invaluable knowledge to those of us who carry for personal protection. I’m very proficient with my firearms and have confidence in my ability to protect myself. And soon, after finishing your book, I hope to have more confidence in my ability to protect myself in the “legal machine” if ever need be. Again, great book and thank you!

Much better informed and aware of the many legal risks of self-defense
Liked “The Law of Self Defense, 2nd Edition” a lot. Feel much better informed & aware of the many legal risks involved in the legitimate use of deadly force. “The Law of Self Defense” is every bit as important as the firearm and ammo. I view the book as a form of self-defense in itself.

You aren’t carrying responsibly without this book

About The Law of Self Defense
Because it’s about your life. We all know that defending yourself against a malicious attacker is imperative. You must win. But that’s just the beginning. Another fight starts right where the last leaves off. Don’t get caught without the tools to win that one too. This site will help you:
- correct the biggest myths you may have learned about the legal consequences of using force in self defense
- avoid the hard-to-see “cliff edge” where people too often lose the right to claim self defense
- keep up to date on not just the laws, but how the courts have interpreted and applied those laws
- clearly understand high-risk ‘gray areas’ of the law that permeate the courts, and how to stay out of them
To help you get started, we’ve put together a list of the top 10 ways people lose their right to argue self defense at trial. See it now >
There’s a lot of well-intentioned “expert” and anecdotal advice on self defense law. But is it right? Is such advice based on what actual courts decide in real world cases, or merely on what folks think the law says?
Should a predator attack, will you be able to act decisively, knowing that you are well within the limits of the law, or will you hesitate ate the critical moment? And which of those outcomes do you owe to yourself… and your family?
At LOSD, we promise:
- Only “plain talk” analysis that makes the laws understandable to everyone, not just lawyers
- Interesting and entertaining, if sometimes heart wrenching, true-life examples of people acting in defense, and the legal outcomes
- No boring bits that aren’t pertinent to the legal “rules of engagement”
- Extensive analysis of over 200 years of case law from the state to federal levels
